A family home in Staines was ransacked by burglars who stole about £1,000 of jewelery on Sunday September 28.

Thieves smashed the back window of the house in Homestead Road at some point between 6.30pm and 8.30pm before emptying drawers, suitcases and cupboards searching for swag.

Dad Don Lawrence returned home from visiting family to find the house in state. He said: "The bedrooms were completely ransacked. There was stuff strewn all over the place - it was like a bomb site."

Police believe the burglars used a rear service road to get into the property's garden and tried to force the kitchen window before breaking in through the bathroom.

They turned the place over but left iPods and laptops, preferring to take jewelery that held great sentimental value.

Mr Lawrence added: "It's not the money we are worried about, it's the sentimental value of the stuff that was stolen. But in a way I guess we are lucky because if we were in it could have been much worse."

Anyone who saw anything or has any information on the burglary should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
