Crazy golf course 'will not be missed'
Players of the temporary crazy golf course in Staines Lammas park say they will not miss it when it shuts this month.
The replacement for the 10-year-old course, which was closed by Spelthorne Council in April, has been criticised by users who will be glad to see a new attraction in the Wraysbury Road park in the spring.
The current assortment of holes will shut at the end of September and a new course will be built during the winter but the location has not been decided.
One user, John Morgan, submitted his view to the Herald & News website. "It is the worst course I have ever played, not to mention dangerous with loose bricks lying around the course," he said.
"It is certainly not worth £2.50 a go. It seems that this is not just my opinion as hardly anyone is playing it. I used to take my children to the lovely course on that park every week. It was value for money, clean and tidy and always busy. Why the hell the council closed it is beyond me."
Spelthorne Council's head of environment services, Sandy Muirhead, said: "A good permanent course could not be built in the short time we had available prior to the summer season. Given the park's popularity we managed to get a course in for the summer.
"In the autumn we will be looking at building a new one of a high quality design. This will then give us time to ensure a high quality facility is permanently available from next summer."

We don't want a new course! We want the old one back. The Council....our elected Council, needs to settle their differences with the previous owners and get it re-opened!
I agree with your reader John. There was nothing wrong with the old course. My children want it back!
David
I have no understanding on why the council wish to replace the original course, which has been used by many for years.
Taxpayers should be up in arms about yet another substandard outcome that they will no doubt have to bear the cost of... who is accountable for these decisions?
STAINES CRAZY GOLF
All the people I have spoken to have been verment in their condemnation of Spelthorne Council in allowing the old crazy golf course to close and some even feel the Council have a hidden agenda. How childish that one of their officials decided to cut off their nose to spite their face ! My grandchildren would like it back please.
Totally agree with the previous comments 'BRING BACK THE OLD COURSE' it was a fantastic crazy golf course and drew people from far and wide to the area of staines who just dont come here to play the temporary course. Local businesses must be suffering as a result of this. The council would be crazy themselves if they didn't re-instate the old course. I think we should start a campaign to 'BRING BACK THE OLD COURSE' and force the council to listen to the man on the street for a change.
Another outstanding example of the lack of judgement shown by a local council.
Why waste valuable tax payers money on a new course when the existing course provided such enjoyment to those who used it. Words fail me!
What on earth was the council thinking when they closed the old one? The temporary one is absolute rubbish and why are they wasting yet more of our money building a new one when the existing course is still there? Ask the council to explain their decision please.
The old course was great and my family really enjoyed it. Why the council wants to waste my and every other tax payers money to build a new one, when there is a perfectly suitable one on the site is beyond belief.
Surely our resources could be better used on other issues than what looks like a petty squabble. Time these officials grew up and became adults it seems!
Re-open the old course, which was great fun and real value for money. Why are the Council planning a new course? Surely this is a total waste of time and money. Please ask the Councillors to explain themselves.
The council just need to get the old course re-opened, why do the morons want to waste cash building a new one when there is a perfectly good one available already?
I think the old course should be re-opened - what do this Council think they are playing at ? An absolute disgrace!
We wantb the old one re opened
The children adore it
I am distraught at the thought of the old course not re-opening. The temporary one was rubbish - what am I going to do with the kids on weekends now ?
Why the Council want to waste our money when the old course was perfect is beyond me.
Will Council officials please be big enough to admit their error and reopen the super old course.
What a joke, the new course is about as crazy as mud - get the old one back on track and let us have a proper test of our putting.
This is yet another total waste of rate payers money, the original course was fantastic and extreemely popular, why fix something if it's not broken? Totally baffling!
Why waste OUR money on building a new course when there was a perfectly good one already available which was popular with all?
Perhaps the Council would like to explain exactly why the old one was closed.
If they can't give a satisfactory explanation it should be re-opened immediately.
Lamentable in Lammas.
What is going on in the park? A neatly designed and well constructed Crazy Golf course is fenced off while a tatty temporary facility is offered.Shape up Spelthorne Council and reinstate the original, highly regarded facility.
I really do not know why the original course was closed, i loved playing there, my short game has fallen to bits since it was closed!! This farce with the temporary course is an absolute disgrace, open the old one again. This council has got a lot to answer for and is wasting tax payers money!!!
Having read the propoganda spouted out by our beloved council in the local papers a few weeks ago about the replacement course having had no complaints, and was proving popular, why are so many comments being made to the contrary now? I too took both my children and many foster children to the course for many years. Playing the new course once I too agree with all the above comments. Why don't the council try something new for a change and tell the truth?
Crazy Golf, Crazy Council! Why throw good money after bad. We should start a campaign to get the old course back up and running. The temporary course very nearly put my kids of crazy golf completely.
I really enjoy playing crazy golf, and am really disappointed that the council has decided to make yet another course. What I'd like to know is why the council shut the old one, in the first place, and then put in a rubbish one in its place? Just how profligate and stupid can you get?
What's the matter with the old course? All the kids I know liked it. Lets have the old course back please.
Who do Spelthorne council think they represent? re open the old course please, my children loved it. Yet another case of Spelthorne councils poor decision making!
This is absolutely crazy economics. My nephew used to love going to the old course, but refuses to go anywhere near the 'new' one.
Bring back the older, better one!!!
This is very silly indeed, Why dont they just open the old decent course again? the temporary one was shocking, really poor...
Like many others, my kids were regular visitors to the old course and it is ridiculous that this council has taken away their chance to enjoy some fresh air, fun and exercise. The more i think about this the more livid i get!
What a complete and utter farce this all is! I read the article a few weeks ago in the Staines and Ashford News and could not believe my eyes. It stated that the new course had been well received by the community! What rubbish. No one was playing it. I then read that the people that ran the old one, had their contract removed due to not providing a risk assesment. How petty! I have been involved in Health and Safety and having seen the temporary course that the council allowed in the park this summer, I would be very interested to see the risk assesment for that course. Can the council provide this? The course was dangerous! It had loose bricks, nails sticking out of dislodged bricks and other factors that where cause for concern.
10 years ago, I wasn't very keen on a course being built in the park, but I changed my mind when it was designed and built to fit in with the surroundings. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the original owners build this with their own money and as their own idea for the council?
If a new one is to be built, will it be as interesting and well designed.
As a newspaper.....are you going to let this happen, when their is obviously strong opposition against this happening and quite clearly a public demand for the old course to be re-openend.
Why are the council wanting to build another crazy golf course?
The old one is quality.
Surely a case of more money than sense....
Re-open the old course!
My children adored the old course. Why spend lots of money on building a new one when a small amount of money would get the old course back to its former glory.
Yet another example of the council wasting money, not to mention the environmental damage of leaving a perfectly usable site to build somewhere else. Everyone can see that it’s a terrible idea to build a new one when the current one just sits there. Use a little bit of common sense Sandy and reopen the old course.
I totally agree with what Linda has said. So this is why the council tax is so prohibitive now. Hair brain schemes spending money to do people out of what they love. Bonkers!
Me and my friends used to love old course, a great way to pass the time and have a laugh. We played the new course once and have not played it since because it so much worse. It just doesn't make sense. What are spelthorne doing???
It's the Council that is crazy, not the golf. Why waste taxpayers' money on replacing a perfectly good and well-loved and used existing facility? The council should listen to the voice of the public they serve for a change.
I am truly lost for words at this decision.
The old course ticked every box, the temporary one is awful and to open a new course would be a waste of money.
What do we need to do to make the council understand this is a "crazy" idea.
Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. We used to love the old course. Did the council who made this decision ever go down and try it? I doubt it. They probably didn't try the new one either. If they want to challenge me to a round get in touch.....
Why do the council have to ruin whats good into something no- one will use, it doesn't make sense bring back the old crazy golf or are you crazy.
My children loved the old one. It's ridiculous that it was closed. It was lovely. Building a new one would be a complete waste of money . We don't need a new one, we want the old one back!
Why get rid of a decent golf course. Whenever I visit a place I like to try out fun things to do. In this case it was a great crazy gold course. Having played on many around the world including "professional" type courses this was up with the best. What are you up to council??? Who in the council will benefit from the new course?????
Please bring back the old course - it was fun for the whole family. Why re invent the wheel when the old course was great?
My family were horrified to see this much-loved old course locked up and overgrown when we visited the park earlier this summer. We always looked forward to playing a round or two every holiday and the one that's been installed to replace it is a joke! Bring back the old course!
I agree! My kids loved the old course and are really upset to see it in its current state. The course was imaginative and attractively landscaped, unlike the temporary one set up this summer. Whoever made this decision needs to listen to the views of visitors to the park and reopen the old course.

Please can the council tell us why they can't reopen the old course? Instead of wasting precious resources on a new one, listen to what's being said and open the old one again. This is CRAZY!
Quite agree - it is scandalous that the council closed the old course - I used to play on it regularly with my kids but the temporary one is dreadful so we don't go anymore!
Re-open the new one now and get the council to explain why they closed it in the first place!
That must be why they call it crazy golf! A previous commenter suggests a campaign - this looks very much like one already. I was non-plussed by the decision to replace the previous, unique course and the whole affair seems like so much council non-think. I often grumbled to myself over this odd decision. Now I see I was far from a lone dissenter. Bring back the old course which was so evidently a labour of love in comparison with the current soulless, neglected (non) effort. Surely the only fair way to putt this right (sic).
Well what can I say that hasn't been said already! My kids have all loved the old crazy golf course and at one stage I asked if I could get a season ticket for my daughter! I am not shocked by the councils decision as they don't listen to the very people who pay their wages! Also, the chap who owned it could not have been more helpful! Please give it back to him!
We're appalled - the old one's fantastic - we want it back!
My children say the old course was "cool". There is no higher rating!
The old course was great - my kids really miss it. Don't know why the council wasted their money building a new one, so re-open the old one and everyone will be happy.
All of my family have played the old course in the past and were horrified to learn of its closure. The new course is nothing in comparison. Please refurbish the old course and get it open again for all to enjoy.
I agree, bring back the old course which was special, I don't understand why it was closed. No need to reinvent the wheel.
I see another article written in the paper wednesday that our beloved council have trotted out the same propoganda about the temporary course being well received. GET REAL! I also presume that the council will be telling us that the new course is to be built due to public pressure!
I was also under the impression that the park was donated to the people of staines by the ashby family for the use of the public, not for the councils' own agenda. I never knew the course was privately owned until reading the story and now feel there is some unterior motive behind this action.
God knows what the new 'high tech' course will look like?
One last point. Were the 'issues' with the previous licensee not resolvable by negotiation?
Clearly the old one won't be missed by the councillor who decided it was a good idea to close it, obviously someone who does not have children and is not in touch with what kids want. We used to go the old park regularly, our children loved it, they are not impressed by the new (somewhat expensive) one and rarely suggest going there! Bring back the old one! - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
My son went to a childrens party recently and one of the games was to have a go on the new temp golf course. What a let down, all the kids had used the old one and said that they missed it and wanted it back. Why 'oh' why does the council constantly waste OUR money closing what is good and useful to the community and spend OUR money on what has now become the joke of Staines. Bring it back before you alienate even more of your people!
