Staines youth learn to breakdance
Fifteen young members of Staines Salvation Army Church learned to breakdance during a trip to London on August 20.
They were among 60 who visited the Salvation Army's training centre at Denmark Hill for an annual 'Summer School' event. Workshops were taken by professional breakdancers 'Sonz1' and 'Cherry
D' as part of the Free2Be project run by the youth organisation of The Salvation Army, Alove.
Free2Be aims to show young people attending Salvation Army churches that they can combine their faith with contemporary youth culture, such as hip-hop and breakdancing.
Sonz1, whose real name is Jeff Goring, said: 'Hip-hop is influential worldwide, so it's a way to connect with young people. I'm trying to show people that you can be a Christian and be involved in hip-hop."
Lee Herdman, the Children's Officer for the Central South division (region) of The Salvation Army, added: "The dancers connected with the young people well and it was obvious that the young people enjoyed what they were doing."
