Bumpy ride for Gresham Road motorists
More speed bumps are to be installed in Gresham Road in Staines to calm traffic outside a school.
The road already has speed bumps on it but Surrey County Council is planning to bring in a 20mph speed limit following concerns raised by Staines Prep School and the police.
But to comply with the authority's policy, an extra set of cushions and a new traffic island outside the school will be put in to slow the average speed from a current level of 26.3mph to less than the proposed new limit.
Sue Davies, who lives in nearby Kingston Road, said: "Everyone agrees that speeding outside a school should be stopped but it seems ridiculous that they have to slow down the traffic first before they can change the speed limit.
"The last thing we need is more bumps that damage our cars - why can't they just change the signs and reduce the speed limit?"
The road is often used as a 'rat-run' for drivers trying to avoid congestion in Staines town centre but there have been no accidents involving pedestrians in the past three years.
The proposed scheme is set to cost the council £25,000 and residents will be consulted before work starts.
