Lee passes army training with honours
Private Lee Williamson, 20, from Staines, has won an award after finishing his army training.
He passed the tough, six month-long Combat Infantryman's Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire, and was named as top of the class.
His platoon commander, Captain Johnny Lanham, said: "Physical training in the infantry is designed to be hard and to test the individual; such physical training includes 15km marches, running, swimming and battlefield fitness.
"Private Williamson has shown consistent hard work and effort to win the Best PT award, an award that recognises the recruit who has performed to the highest standard in physical training throughout the course." Lee will receive his award at the pass out parade ceremony at the Infantry Training Centre on 3 October.
Lee, a former pupil of Thamesmead, enjoyed boxing before joining the army and hopes to pursue the sport when he joins his battalion. He said: "I've always been a keen sportsman, but it was a real surprise and honour to win the award. I hope to continue to improve my fitness and maybe get into army boxing once I join my battalion."
After some well earned leave Lee will join the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment stationed in Paderborn, Germany. The battalion, nicknamed the 'Armoured Tigers', is due to deploy to Iraq in the future.
