Bring back smacking says councillor
Yob behaviour could be nipped in the bud if parents were allowed to smack their children, according to Staines councillor Colin Davis.
Residents in Leacroft have been plagued by an increase in drug dealing and antisocial behaviour and Cllr Davis has advocated a return to corporal punishment to keep youngsters in line.
The issue was raised at a Staines neighbourhood policing meeting last week and beat bobby PC Teresa Pullen admitted that call-outs to the area had increased in recent weeks, particularly near the pedestrian tunnel to Shortwood Common.
She said police have increased patrols to the area but Cllr Davis has a different solution to the problem.
He said: "We shouldn't forget the parents' role in this. The fact is that when I was a lad, if I indulged in half these activities, my father would have ensured I couldn't sit down for a week.
"If a father did that these days he would be taken away by the police and locked up. Discipline has become very difficult for families because of the fear that parents could be locked up."
