Carrot mad Bob runs the marathon

A Staines man will be running the London Marathon on Sunday April 26 dressed as a carrot.

Forty -nine-year-old Bob Prothero, of Gordon Close, is dressing up as the vegetable in an attempt to beat a world record for fastest vegetable to run a marathon.

He hopes to raise £2,000 for charity WaterAid, who works with the world's poor people to help them gain access to clean water.

Bob said: "The carrot costume is based on a flying disc, like a big frisbee, with orange material and stuffing to build the carrot shape. Long orange football socks and face paint complete the orange bits. There is a green part on top made from felt, with leaves stuck to pipe cleaners and overall it's fairly light and airy.

"I'm hoping it won't impede running too much, although I'm too shy to try it out in public."
Some people have said they will double their sponsorship money if Bob beats the marathon's fastest time of five hourse.

Bob, an IT manager for Kodak, said: "If I can provide a laugh for the supporters around the course, come away with a world record, and raise money to help those in need, I'll have a great day."
