Vintage buses return to Staines

Posted by Mark Goode on Jun 1, 09 11:55 AM in Clubs/societies

Two buses which served Staines in the golden age of transport visited the High Street on Friday May 29.

A 1949 Leyland Tiger and an ABC Regal, which was built in 1953, were driven onto the high street along with a 1925 Dennis four and a half tonner, all from Cobham Bus Museum.

The event was to raise publicity for an annual event at the museum on Sunday May 31.

Kevin Hibbs, publicity officer at the museum, said: "The occasion was essentially a publicity drive for us but also it was nice for Staines have three large vehicles drive onto the high street.

"It made a nice diversion from the shopping."

The Tiger and Regal paraded as numbers 216 and 218 driving from Kingston to Staines and back.

The Tiger would have run from 1949 to 1953 until the Regal took over, but from 1953 to 1962 the Tiger would have occasionally been used to do Walton Bridge being weak not being able to ake the larger Regal.

Mr Hibbs said: "The shoppers were just having fun, climbing onto the seats and realising they were a lot more comfortable than modern buses. It brought back a lot of memories for the older people and the younger people learnt a bit."
