160 Santas run through Staines town centre
Drivers and shoppers looked on in surprise as 160 Santas sprinted through Staines town centre on Sunday December 6.
The second annual Santa Sprint was organised by Spelthorne Council, which saw the men, women, children, and old age pensioners run for two miles in a figure of eight through and around the High Street.
The costumes were provided by the council in the £8 entry fee, and the event was started by Mayor of Spelthorne Caroline Spencer.
She said: "I started the sprint last year and had the privilege of doing it again this year. The general public were aghast with what was going on, and where come and up and asking me, and standing about and watching. It was good community fun."
Claire Moore, sport and facilities manager at the council, hailed it as a success due to the double number of entrants this year.
She said: "We held it as a community engagement event to get everybody in the mood for Christmas, and we were also helping to get people thinking healthily.
"They were running before the shops opened as they started at 9.30am, but everybody seemed to have a great time."
Winners were given a glass trophy but every participant was given a medal and a free hot drink in Debenhams.
