Spelthorne reporter Mark Goode joines the 466 Staines fans on one of the six coaches

Everyone was in high spirits as I walked into the Thames Club at 4.45pm and got on one of the coaches.

Strangers and friends alike were talking enthusiastically through the rush hour traffic to The Den, with fans singing the club's customary 'yellow and blue' chant.

I was sitting in the press box, but I could still hear the roar of The Staines Massive from the other end, and although they were outnumbered six times by Millwall fans, they never really stopped singing.

The atmosphere was different on the way back, with even the radio playing sombre tunes, but fans were still happy they got so far.

Shaun Smith, 24, from Staines, said: "They tried hard, and I would say they played amazing, but they just couldn't do it. I think Millwall showed their skill. I have been going to see Staines since I was about 16 because I think you should support your local team."

Brother Jason, 22, said: "They tried hard, but it must have been quite intimidating because it was an away game at Millwall's ground. I'm glad I came."

Chairman of the club Alan Boon, said the 466 fans was the highest away number they have ever had.

He said: "At half time when we were 1-0 down, I started to get depressed. But then I thought, hang on, this is Millwall. Their goalkeeper gets £4,000 a week, that is my budget. We did well to get to the second round, so it was just the end of a brilliant run.

"We got cheered off by the Millwall fans so I was very pleased."

We'd like to hear from you.
