Tree planting and recycling Christmas cards are two of the activities which have earned a Staines school an award.

Staines Prep School, in Gresham Road has been given a gold award by the Woodland Trust for participating in various eco activities, which have included visiting a woodland and growing trees from seeds, to earn points on the trust's website.

The scheme is called the Green Tree Schools Award scheme and was only launched this year by the trust.

Derek Heath, science teacher at the school, said: "We are very grateful for the trust's support and would recommend their excellent website to all who are interested in teaching children about woodland habitats.

"It is great to see the children actively involved in a project which will go on growing for many decades to come, and to see their pride in being given a gold award."

Karen Letten, schools development officer at the trust, explained that the system works by teachers choosing activities from their website www.naturedetectives.org.uk.

Upon completion the school gets points to work towards, bronze, silver, and gold awards.
