Staines Town Chairman wants fan to get behind the team for replay against Millwall
Staines Town Chairman Alan Boon said he will pay for coaches to the second round of the FA Cup against Millwall if fans turn up to a league game against Basingstoke Town on Saturday December 5.
The gesture comes after Staines drew with the League One side Millwall on Saturday November 28 in Wheatsheaf Park, which saw around 3000 people turn up to see the teams draw 1-1.
There were fears from residents that there may be trouble after the game, but due to a strong police presence no arrests were made or crimes committed.
Mr Boon said: "Given we normally get 400 people coming down, it was a good turnout. But we need the town to get behind us for the next match, so we can take on Derby at home.
"I walked into Staines after the match and saw a banner outside the library saying well done Staines Town, but that was it. The whole town should be supporting us, so anyone who comes to watch us play Basingstoke on Saturday will get a seat on a coach, paid for by us. Hopefully we will get four of five to go down."
The match will streamed live on the Football Association's official website, and if Staines win, they will play Derby County in the third round.
Around 30 police officers guided traffic and made sure no one was misbehaving on the day, and there were no reports of crime.
Wheatsheaf Lane resident Carol Law, who has been a Staines Town fan for 10 years, said: "It was a fantastic game, and Staines should have won because they were the better side. I was a bit worried about possible trouble because it was hyped up a bit and we were getting assurance calls from the police.
"But the atmosphere in the ground was great, and the Millwall fans were very well behaved."
Dale Hines, of Shepperton, said: "It was a good atmosphere, and the Millwall fans were great. They were a credit to their side."
Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Councillor for Staines, said: "I would like to congratulate Surrey Police on their fantastic job they did, as well as offering my congratulations to Staines Town. It was a great atmosphere and there was no trouble. They really deserved to win."
