Two Spelthorne residents have been given awards for giving more than 175 blood donations between them.

Susan Burgess, of Lammas Road, Staines, and Linda Bishop, of Queens Walk, Ashford, were given a crystal decanter for more than 100 donations and a a crystal plate for more than 75 respectively at a National Blood Service ceremony.

The pair attended the donor awards ceremony in Windsor on Tuesday January 19 along with 41 other donors from three other southern counties, but Mrs Burgess was one of six who had achieved 100 donations.

Jonathan Sewell, lead donor regulations manager, said: "Becoming a regular blood donor takes commitment and shows compassion. The majority of the donors have given blood three times a year for the last 25 years, an amazing achievement. Their blood is helping to save lives every day and for that we are truly grateful."

Mrs Bishop started donating because her grandson had leukaemia, and her husband, who had grafts and a hear valve, had to rely on blood transfusions.

Because of donors, they are both alive today.

Mrs Burgess first started donating to follow in her mother's footsteps, and after she realised she had a rare blood type she deemed it important to continue.

We'd like to hear from you.
