Staines grandfather skis through snow after car gets stuck

Most people would have decided to turn back when their car slid over heavy snow, but one grandfather from Staines had a better idea.

Roger Harding, of Lark Avenue, was on the way to a Freemasons meeting in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, to talk about his favourite charities, when his car started to slide across the road.

But instead of giving up or having to spend the night in his car, he donned some emergency skis he had in the boot of his car and skied the rest of the way there.

Mr Harding, a sales account manager, said: "The forecasters had said that you should only drive if the area was necessary, but I couldn't think of a more necessary journey than to raise money for my cherished good causes.

"The council and highways people had done a good job of gritting the major carriageways, but the untreated side roads were very slippery, and my car started to slide around.

"So I thought it would be safer to use the skis, which I have with me as part of my emergency kit, along with rubber boots, a spade, and a blanket. I did get a few odd looks from people as I sped by though."

Mr Harding is a member of the Buckinghamshire Freemasons, and he made the event just in time to talk about the charities MacMillan Nurses and the British Heart Foundation on Wednesday January 6.

He first started ski-ing in 1985 and his favourite resort in Colorado, in the USA.

He is a father of one and the grandfather of two twins.

We'd like to hear from you.
